Adler, Cyrus

Bibliothécaire de la Smithsonian Institution et fondateur de l'American Jewish Historical Society, né à Van Buren (Arkansas) le 13 septembre 1863, il étudia à l'université de Pennsylvanie (licence 1883, maîtrise 1886) puis à l'université Johns Hopkins (doctorat 1887), avant de devenir conservateur adjoint des antiquités orientales à la Smithsonian Institution en 1887. À l'origine de l'American Jewish Historical Society, née d'un appel qu'il lança en 1892, il en fut secrétaire puis président à partir de 1898 ; il publia notamment, avec Allan Ramsay, « Told in the Coffee House » (New York, 1898) et dirigea l'« American Jewish Year Book » à partir de 1899.
