Jewish families massacred in the town

Zanzour, to the west of Tripoli, was home to a small, long-established Jewish community living among a Muslim population with whom it shared markets and trades. The violence that erupted in Tripoli at the beginning of November reached the town within hours.

Entire families were massacred in their homes; others were saved by neighbors who hid them. As in other towns in the region, the absence of any public security forces on the ground left the attackers free to act until the arrival of British troops.

The community of Zanzour would never reconstitute itself: the survivors made their way to Tripoli, then left the country during the mass emigration to Israel.
