the neighboring town of Tripoli is attacked, houses and synagogue burned
Tripolitania was then under British military administration, following the end of Italian occupation and the fascist racial laws. In early November, violence broke out in Tripoli and spread within hours to the towns of the suburbs and coast.
Amrus, a village near Tripoli, was home to an ancient community living by crafts and small trade. Jewish homes were attacked, the synagogue set on fire, and residents chased through the alleyways. The British intervention was slow; it would take several days for calm to return throughout the region.
This pogrom was the first of such magnitude in the modern history of Libya. It shattered a centuries-old equilibrium and prompted much of the community to leave — a departure that the exodus of the following years would complete.
