The Italian army interns on the island of Rab Jews whom it has removed from the Ustaše; after the armistice, the able-bodied internees join the partisans and some of the others are recaptured by the Germans.
Thousands of Jewish refugees in the Italian occupation zone, who had come from Croatia and Bosnia, were interned on the island of Rab in the Adriatic, where the Italian authorities had gathered them rather than hand them over. After the Italian capitulation in September, the Rab camp found itself without guards. Some of the internees made their way to the mainland with the partisans, while others waited in place and were recaptured by German troops. Rab is one of the rare places in the region from which many emerged alive.
