A week after the arrival of German troops, the notables summoned to the Great Synagogue are held and men rounded up in the streets to be sent to labour camps.

One week after German troops entered the country, Jewish notables were summoned to the Grande Synagogue of Tunis. They were held there, then ordered to provide workers under threat of reprisals. At the same time, men were rounded up in the streets of Tunis and in cafés, gathered together and sent to worksites opened near the front lines. The president of the community was held personally responsible for meeting the quotas. This day marked the opening of the six months of German occupation, the only ones North Africa would ever know.
