the great synagogue of Tunis set on fire, shops looted

The Jewish community of Tunis, one of the oldest in the Maghreb, had already greatly diminished since the country's independence. The announcement of the Six-Day War triggered an unexpectedly violent riot in the capital.

The great synagogue on the avenue de la Liberté was invaded and set on fire, its Torah scrolls burned in the street; Jewish shops were looted in the city center. President Bourguiba publicly condemned the violence, restored order, and promised the rebuilding of the sanctuary.

Despite this official response, the events of that day led most of the remaining families to leave. The community of Tunis dwindled within a few years to a few hundred people.
