Internment of Jewish men after the Six-Day War, at the Abu Zaabal camp and then at Tourah

1967-1970·Égypte

Toll
~400 internés

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

After the expulsions that had followed Suez, only a remnant of a community remained in Egypt. At the outbreak of the Six-Day War, the Jewish men of the country were arrested in their homes and interned.

They were taken to the camp of Abu Zaabal, and then many to the prison of Tourah, where they remained for months and sometimes years, subjected to beatings and deprivation. Their release came in dribs and drabs, through the intermediary of foreign governments and the Red Cross, and was almost always accompanied by expulsion.

This was the final act of a history that had begun in the time of the Ptolemies: upon leaving these internment camps, only a few dozen families remained in Egypt.
