Pendant et après l'expédition franco-britannique et israélienne sur le canal, le gouvernement égyptien décrète l'internement de ressortissants étrangers et de Juifs, place leurs entreprises sous séquestre et retire la nationalité à une partie d'entre eux. Des familles reçoivent l'ordre de quitter l'Égypte en quelques jours, avec une valise et sans devises, après avoir signé une renonciation à leurs biens.

Beaucoup n'avaient jamais eu d'autre pays. La communauté, l'une des plus anciennes du monde méditerranéen, ne s'en relève pas : ce qu'il en restait gagne la France, l'Italie, le Brésil et Israël dans les années qui suivent, et l'exode s'achèvera après la guerre des Six Jours.
