After the fall of Massada, Sicarii refugees in Egypt attempted to rouse the community of Alexandrie; its elders handed them over to the Romans themselves rather than see it compromised. The captives were tortured without any of them consenting to acknowledge the emperor as master, and the steadfastness of the children struck those who witnessed it.
In Cyrénaïque, the agitator Jonathan the weaver led people of little means into the desert, then, upon his arrest, denounced the notables of Cyrène and Rome as accomplices. Vespasien seized the occasion to order the closure of the Jewish temple of Onias at Léontopolis, which had been functioning for more than two centuries.
