A town in eastern Slovakia, Humenné was among the first to be affected: the men and then the families were gathered at the end of winter and taken by convoys towards the death camp and towards the camps of the Lublin district.
Humenné, on the Laborec, held an ancient and numerous community, orthodox for the most part, whose merchants supplied the villages of the eastern Carpathians. It had its great synagogue, its houses of study and its charitable institutions. From its station departed one of the first convoys of the Slovak spring, carrying away young women from the town and the surrounding region; the convoys of families followed in the weeks that came. The Jews of Humenné were transported northward to the extermination centers; the community was destroyed.
