Summoned under the pretext of resettlement, the Jews of Taganrog were led to the ravine called 'Balka Smerti' and shot.
Taganrog, a port on the Sea of Azov, is occupied in mid-October. A few days later, a notice summons the Jewish population to a square in the city, with their papers, under the pretext of resettlement in a designated quarter.
Those summoned are led toward a ravine on the outskirts, which the population would thereafter call "Balka Smerti," the ravine of death, and shot on October 29, 1941. Executions would resume in small groups throughout the entire occupation of the city.
