Internment at the Pithiviers camp

The camp at Pithiviers, in the Loiret, opens in the spring to receive the men arrested during the rafle du billet vert. Wooden barracks, barbed wire, and French guards: the facility is administered by the prefecture, and the internees work in the surrounding fields. The following summer, the camp receives families rounded up in Paris; mothers are then separated from their children and deported first, while the children remain alone for several weeks before being taken away in turn. A freight station, a few hundred meters away, served as the departure point for several convoys heading east.
