The Shoah (1939–1945)
Destruction of the Sarajevo synagogues
16 avr. 1941·Sarajevo
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
The great Sephardic temple of Sarajevo was ransacked and burned upon the entry of German troops; the books and ritual objects of Bosnia's oldest community were destroyed or dispersed.
The synagogues of Sarajevo are looted and devastated in the days following the entry of German troops and the establishment of the Ustasha regime. The great Sephardic synagogue, one of the largest in the Balkans, is emptied of its scrolls and ritual objects; some are burned in the street. The community of Sarajevo, heir to the exiles from Spain who settled there under the Ottomans, still spoke Judeo-Spanish. Arrests and deportations to Ustasha camps begin in the weeks that follow.
