The Shoah (1939–1945)

Pasvalys shooting

26 août 1941·Pasvalys

Toll
plus d'un millier de morts

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

Gathered on the pretext of a transfer, the Jews of Pasvalys are led to the Žadeikiai forest and shot in small groups; the shooters are a detachment from Kaunas and men from the local police, and the operation is timed to take place in a single day.

The community of Pasvalys is concentrated in a few houses in the town center during the summer, subjected to forced labor and fines, before being led to the forest of Žadeikiai. The Jewish inhabitants of the surrounding hamlets are brought there at the same time, so that the pit receives the Jewish population of the entire district. The site long remained unmarked; it is the detachment's records that made it possible to establish the date to the exact day.
