The Shoah (1939–1945)

Shooting of Kaišiadorys

26 août 1941·Kaišiadorys

Toll
plus d'un millier de morts

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

The Jews of the town, grouped since July in a closed quarter, are led toward a nearby woods and shot the same day as those of several towns in the district; the commando's report records the operation as a routine task.

Kaišiadorys lies on the railway line between Kaunas and Vilna, which accounts for its early liquidation. The Jews of the town and those from neighboring villages are gathered in outbuildings along the tracks, then taken in small groups to a nearby quarry. The handling of weapons is entrusted to local auxiliaries supervised by a handful of officers, following the pattern applied throughout the province that summer.
