A provincial capital on the southern route, Oryol sees the Jewish inhabitants who had been unable to leave registered by order of the occupier, gathered and shot in the ravines on the periphery.
Oriol, a garrison town and market town, comes under German administration in the autumn. The Jews remaining in place, along with refugees from the west, are counted and marked, then led out of the town in successive groups during the winter.
