City of the forests of the Desna, Briansk saw the Jews remaining there imprisoned and then shot, the region subsequently becoming one of the centers of forest resistance where a few survivors found refuge.
Briansk, a major railway junction surrounded by forests, falls in the autumn and becomes a German base against the partisans who hold the region. The Jews registered in the city and its suburbs are confined, put to work on the railway lines, then led out of the city and shot.
