The Vichy regime extends its antisemitic legislation to the protectorate: a dahir signed in the autumn bars the Jews of Morocco from public service, education, the press, and cinema. The text reproduces the terms of the statute promulgated a few days earlier in metropolitan France, but it applies to a population that, in its vast majority, are subjects of the sultan and not French citizens. Dismissed civil servants lose their positions without compensation; lawyers and doctors are subjected to quotas. The sultan affixes his seal to a text he did not draft, and Moroccan Memory has retained that he refused to add to it the marking measures demanded elsewhere.
