The Sarre had been reunited with the Reich five years earlier by plebiscite, and most of its Jews had emigrated immediately. Those who remained were the oldest or the most destitute — those who had lacked the means to leave. This is a constant feature of these deportations: they first reach those whom persecution had already ruined.
