Pogrom in the mining city, two days after that of Oujda

Jerada was a mining town in eastern Morocco, born of coal, where a small Jewish community of merchants and craftsmen lived. Two days after the pogrom in Oujda, the neighboring town, the violence spread there as well.

The crowd attacked the Jewish quarter in the morning; men, women, and children were killed in the streets and in their homes, including the community's rabbi. The protectorate authorities restored order during the day, and convictions would be handed down.

These two days in June, occurring one month after the proclamation of the State of Israel, are the deadliest in contemporary Moroccan Jewish history. They triggered the departure of the community of Jerada and weighed heavily on the decision to emigrate made by the country's entire Jewish population.
