Moulay Slimane orders the transfer of Jews from Rabat, Salé, Meknès and Tétouan to enclosed mellahs

Sultan Moulay Slimane orders the Jews of the cities of Rabat, Salé, Meknès and Tétouan to leave the quarters where they had lived among the general population and to move into enclosed mellahs, built or enlarged for that purpose. The abandoned houses are sold and the extra-muros synagogues closed.

The mellah had long existed in Fès and Marrakech; the measure extends it to northern Morocco and makes it the rule. Closed at night, the mellah offered protection during times of unrest and a constraint the rest of the time; until the protectorate it would remain the framework within which the great majority of urban Moroccan Jewry lived.
