L'assassinat d'Alexandre II par les révolutionnaires de la Narodnaïa Volia — où figurait une femme juive — fut aussitôt suivi de la rumeur que les Juifs avaient tué le tsar. La vague partit d'Elisavetgrad au printemps, gagna Kiev quelques jours après, puis les bourgs et les villes du sud de l'Empire russe, l'Ukraine et la Bessarabie ; Varsovie fut touchée à Noël, Balta l'année suivante, Ekaterinoslav, Rostov, Nijni-Novgorod dans les deux années qui suivirent.

Ce qui caractérise cette vague n'est pas seulement son ampleur mais son régime : les autorités locales laissèrent faire, la troupe arriva tard, et le gouvernement conclut de ces violences que le mal venait des victimes. Les « lois de mai » qui suivirent interdirent aux Juifs de s'établir hors des bourgs, d'acheter ou de louer la terre, de commercer le dimanche — et furent maintenues jusqu'à la révolution.

Les conséquences sont celles qui ont refait le peuple juif : l'émigration de masse vers les États-Unis et l'Europe occidentale commence là, le premier départ des *Bilou* vers la Terre d'Israël aussi, et Pinsker publie *Auto-émancipation* dans la foulée.
