The Jews of Rome had seen, under the Roman Republic, the gates of the ghetto fall and the tree of liberty planted in their quarter; some had taken seats in the assemblies of the Republic. Its collapse before the Neapolitan troops returned the city to the pope and the ghetto to its walls. Those who had compromised themselves were pursued, imprisoned, and subjected to fines; the entire community was required to pay the costs of the restoration. The ghetto regime, briefly abolished, lasted another three-quarters of a century: it would not fall definitively until the capture of Rome by the Italian troops.
