The day the "Viva Maria" insurgents entered Siena, the ghetto was overrun. Thirteen Jews were killed there. Several bodies, and according to accounts some victims still alive, were dragged to the Campo square and thrown onto a pyre lit in front of the public palace, where the papers and emblems of the French government were already burning. The crowd acted in the name of the Virgin whose name the movement bore, before the eyes of an authority that did nothing. The names of the dead are preserved in the community's registers; the episode is the deadliest of the Tuscan unrest of that year.
