The "Viva Maria" band, having left Arezzo after the French withdrawal, entered Monte San Savino and drove out the Jews. The community, ancient and small, had its synagogue and its cemetery; it never reconstituted itself. Its members dispersed toward Siena, Florence, and Livorno, and the town remained without Jews. This is the only case, in the Tuscany of that year, where the insurrection resulted in the permanent disappearance of a community: elsewhere the ghettos were pillaged and their inhabitants struck down, but Jewish life resumed there. The expulsion from Monte San Savino closes a presence attested since the Middle Ages.
