The papal edict required Jews in the Rome ghetto to attend forced sermons, under penalty of a fine. A priest would speak, Jews designated on a rotating basis were required to listen, and overseers verified that they did not cover their ears.
The practice was ancient — dating back to the sixteenth century — but its persistence on the eve of the Enlightenment speaks to the immobility of the pontifical regime in this matter. The Rome ghetto would be the last in Western Europe to fall, and it would not fall through internal reform: it would take the capture of the city by unified Italy.
