the town seized by the Haidamaks, the Jewish quarter destroyed
Old Cossack city on the Dniepr, Tcherkassy fell into the hands of the insurgents during the summer of the Koliivchtchyna, and its Jewish quarter was sacked. The uprising, which had started from the forests of Kholodnyï Iar, had taken on the appearance of a war within a few weeks: the haïdamaks claimed to be armed with an order from the Empress of Russia — the "golden rescript," an apocryphal document that circulated from village to village — and killed in the name of an authority they did not possess. The Jewish communities of the right bank, which had slowly reconstituted themselves after the massacres of the previous century, were destroyed once again.
