the town delivered for several days to looting

In the month of May, the bands of ataman Grigoriev subjected Tcherkassy to several days of looting.

Grigoriev had served in turn under Ukrainian nationalists and under the Bolsheviks before rising up on his own account. His bands were responsible for dozens of pogroms within a matter of weeks. The figure epitomizes the Ukrainian civil war: armed warlords with no stable allegiance, whose only constant program was the pillaging of Jewish towns.
