A false accusation of murder strikes the community of Hébron, one of the four holy cities of Judaism. It is lifted, but at the cost of a collective ransom that leaves the community indebted for years.
The community preserved the memory of this event under the name "Pourim de Hébron": a date on which the account of the deliverance is read, in the manner of the book of Esther. These "local Purims" are an institution of the communities of the East and of Europe — each one thus keeps the memory of the day it escaped the worst, and this memory is liturgical before it is historical.
