Under Paul IV, a new auto-da-fé of the Talmud and Hebrew books was celebrated in Rome, preceded by seizures in homes and synagogues.
The same pope had, a few years earlier, confined the Jews of Rome to a ghetto, imposing the yellow hat upon them, forbidding them every trade except rag-dealing and pawnbroking, and reducing their synagogues to one. The Roman community, the oldest in Europe — established even before the destruction of the Temple — entered there into three centuries of confinement from which it would not emerge until Italian unification.
