The Jews were expelled from Recanati and the secondary towns of the Papal States.
Papal policy had changed under Paul IV: instead of protecting Jews by keeping them in an inferior condition, it now aimed to confine them, impoverish them, and drive them to baptism. The ghetto of Rome had been established three years earlier, and the communities of small towns were gradually suppressed or gathered into the closed quarters of the larger ones.
