The Inquisition tribunal was established in Goa, in Portuguese India, and there pursued the new Christians.
The Holy Office had followed the Portuguese overseas: in Goa as in Brazil, the descendants of those forcibly baptized were pursued, having gone far away seeking a distance that did not protect them. The Goa tribunal was, of all those in the Portuguese world, the one whose reputation for harshness remained the heaviest.
