Nariman House, in the Colaba neighborhood, was home to Mumbai's Habad center: a guesthouse and synagogue run by a young couple of emissaries, Gavriel and Rivka Holtzberg, who welcomed Israeli travelers, businessmen, and visiting students. During the coordinated attacks carried out in the city in late November 2008 by a Lashkar-e-Taiba commando unit, two assailants broke away from the main group to storm the house and hold it for nearly three days. The hostages were killed before the intervention of Indian special forces. The Holtzbergs' son, two years old, was saved by his Indian nanny, Sandra Samuel. The center was rebuilt and reopened in memory of the couple.
