La dénonciation vint de convertis qui soutenaient que le Talmud contenait des blasphèmes contre le Christ. Le Saint-Office ordonna la saisie et la destruction ; le bûcher fut dressé au Campo dei Fiori, à Rome, et allumé le jour de Roch Hachana — la date n'est pas une coïncidence, elle est un message.

La mesure fut aussitôt étendue : Venise, dont les presses imprimaient alors l'essentiel des livres hébreux d'Europe, brûla ses stocks ; Ferrare, Mantoue, Urbino, Ravenne, Crémone suivirent. Des bibliothèques entières de communautés disparurent, et l'imprimerie hébraïque italienne, qui avait donné les grandes éditions Bomberg, ne s'en releva pas.

La conséquence est encore lisible dans les livres : les éditions postérieures du Talmud portent des passages coupés, remplacés par des blancs ou par des formules de substitution, et les exemplaires antérieurs sont d'une rareté qui date de ces bûchers.
