In the wake of the bull of Jules III ordering the seizure of the Talmud, bonfires of Hebrew books were held in the public squares of Ferrare, Venice and Mantoue: copies were seized from homes and synagogues and burned publicly.
Venice was then the world capital of Hebrew printing: it was there that the editions of the Talmud had been composed whose pagination still serves today as a reference for all scholarship. To burn these books in the city that printed them was to strike Judaism in its newest instrument of transmission.
