The ghetto of Ferrara was established following the annexation of the duchy to the Papal State: the community was enclosed.
Ferrara had been, under the Este dukes, one of the principal refuges of Portuguese Marranos and one of the freest cities in Italy for Jews; the annexation brought it under the regime of the Papal States. It was this same movement that, over a century, had enclosed Rome, Venice, Florence, Mantua and nearly all the cities of the peninsula.
