The Shoah (1939–1945)

Arrests in Ferrara

nov. 1943·Ferrare

Toll
bilan non établi

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

The community of Ferrara, one of the oldest in Emilia, is arrested in successive waves; its members are grouped in the city's prisons then sent to the Fossoli camp.

Arrests strike Ferrare in the autumn, in a city whose community dated back to the Middle Ages and had welcomed the exiles from the Iberian Peninsula. Local fascism had already carried out a retaliatory massacre there just weeks earlier, targeting prominent citizens of the city, several of whom were Jewish. Those arrested in Ferrare are taken to the Fossoli camp. The Jewish cemetery of the city, nestled against the ramparts, will remain one of the few witnesses to this community.
