Expulsion of Jews from the duchy
1493·Ferrare
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
The Jews were expelled from the Duchy of Ferrare.
The measure did not last: the Este dukes soon recalled the Jews and made their city one of the principal refuges for Portuguese marranos fleeing the Inquisition, to such an extent that Ferrare saw the publication, in the middle of the century, of the Bible in Spanish printed for them. This policy of welcome held until the devolution of the duchy to the Church, which brought the ghetto with it.
