The Talmud was publicly burned in Bologna, a city of the Papal States.
The measure came from a decree of the Roman Holy Office, carried out that year throughout Italy; the first bonfire was lit in Rome, on the Campo dei Fiori, on a day of Roch Hachana. Thousands of copies were destroyed, the Hebrew printing houses of Italy, which were the finest in the world, were ruined by it, and the study of the Talmud had to be carried on for generations using texts mutilated by censorship.
