The Portuguese New Christians were expelled from the kingdom of France, and the measure affected Provence, before being revoked shortly thereafter.
France officially admitted no Jews since the general expulsion of the fourteenth century, but it received Portuguese merchants in the ports of the Midi and the Atlantic, under the name of New Christians, and granted them letters patent; it is from these merchants that the communities of Bordeaux and Bayonne would emerge, Jewish in fact well before they were so in law.
