Duke Albert V orders the expulsion of Jews from the entire Duchy of Bavaria. The measure extends a policy of exclusion begun by the cities of the southern Empire in the previous century, which had already emptied Ratisbonne, Nuremberg, and Augsbourg.

Driven from the cities, families retreated to the countryside and rural lordships, where minor princes and Imperial knights granted them, in exchange for a fee, the right of residence. It is there, in a Bavaria of villages, that the rural Judaism of Franconia and Swabia took shape, with its small-town synagogues and regional cemeteries, which would survive until the twentieth century.
