Jews expelled from the Papal States, except Rome and Ancona

The bull "Hebraeorum gens" was enforced: the Jews were expelled from the Papal States, except from Rome and Ancona, and the community of Bologna disappeared.

Bologna had possessed one of the oldest communities in northern Italy and a renowned Hebrew printing press. Its cemetery was destroyed and its stones repurposed; a great number of them were recovered in the twentieth century, in the foundations of a convent.
