Riot against the Jewry, in the wake of Provence's attachment to France

The Jewish quarter of Arles was attacked during a riot, in the wake of the annexation of Provence to France.

Provence had been home to one of the most learned Jewish communities in the West, with its schools of translators and philosophers; the annexation brought troops and people from the north, among whom Jews had no longer had the right to reside since the general expulsion from France. The riots of those years preceded by little the expulsion of the Jews of Provence, at the end of the century.
