Black Death massacres in Provence

The Jewish quarter of Arles was attacked during the Black Death massacres. The Arlesian community was one of the oldest in Provence, attested since the Merovingian era.

The comital and municipal authorities intervened, and part of the Jews of Arles survived: the city would still have a community until the expulsion from Provence at the end of the fifteenth century. The survivors then made their way to the Comtat Venaissin, pontifical territory, where Jews were tolerated without interruption until the Revolution.
