La communauté de Madrid, alors bourg de médiocre importance, fut attaquée lors de la vague qui parcourut la Castille.

L'ampleur du mouvement tient à l'absence d'autorité : le roi Jean Iᵉʳ venait de mourir, son fils avait onze ans, et le conseil de régence était divisé. Les lettres de protection envoyées aux villes n'eurent aucun effet. Les cortès réunies ensuite constatèrent le désastre sans châtier personne : nul ne fut jugé pour ces mois-là.
