The auto-da-fé celebrated on the Plaza Mayor of Madrid in the presence of Charles II, the court, and an immense crowd was the most solemn ever held in Spain. It lasted the entire day; the sentences fell principally on those accused of judaizing, most of them of Portuguese origin, and some among them were handed over to the secular arm.
Francisco Rizi left behind a large painting, preserved in the Museo del Prado, which depicts the full apparatus of the ceremony: tiered stands, platforms, and the procession of the condemned in their sanbenitos. The work is today one of the principal images through which the Spanish Inquisition is known.
