Marie-Jeanne-Baptiste de Savoie established the ghetto of Turin: the community was confined within an enclosed quarter.
The Duchy of Savoy was following, a century behind, what the states of Italy had already done; this was the last great wave of enclosure on the peninsula. The ghetto of Turin lasted until the emancipation granted by the King of Sardinia in the mid-nineteenth century, after which the community commissioned the construction of the Mole Antonelliana, which it was unable to complete and which has since become the emblem of the city.
