the call attacked
The call of Tortosa was attacked during the wave that started from Seville and swept through the Jewish quarters of Spain.
The city on the Ebro, in southern Catalonia, guarded the passage toward Valencia; its community was ancient and its tombstones bear Hebrew inscriptions, the oldest of which date back to the early Middle Ages. It survived the wave in a reduced form, and it was there that, twenty-two years later, the disputation of Tortosa would be held, where the rabbis of Aragon were compelled to defend the Talmud before the antipope.
