The community of Wissembourg, on the northern border of Alsace, was destroyed during the Black Death.
The town was an imperial abbey that had become a free city; its Jewish community was ancient and perished with this wave.
The Jews of northern Alsace then retreated to the lordships of the neighboring Palatinate, where letters of protection were sold to them.
