Né à Jérusalem dans une famille séfarade de rabbins et de lettrés originaire d'Izmir, il fut l'un des premiers écrivains hébreux modernes d'origine séfarade-orientale. Constatant que la littérature hébraïque ne peignait que le monde ashkénaze, il entreprit de décrire la vie, la langue et les coutumes des séfarades du Moyen-Orient, de « Lunah » jusqu'à ses grands romans.
